Judge a Book by Its Cover #2

Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible

A Review by Drew McEleney

If you thought my first installment of my new feature “Judge a Book by its Cover” was good you are really in for a treat because this review is all the better. Today’s review is of the tome Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible by Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver. I call it a tome because it is a big sucker of a book and it is also called a bible so I thought tome an appropriate descriptor in this case.

While we are talking about the title, what is the deal with calling every book The Such and Such Bible … do we really want to read books called The Ultimate Plumbers Bible or The Lint Trap Cleaner’s Bible? I say nay. When I think bible I am thinking about the sacred book of Christianity – you know chapter and verse and the like. I am not thinking of a review of the latest design changes to a Lotus Messaging client. Maybe they mention for loops in Proverbs but I personally never got past Exodus. Genesis was a real page turner though.

But I digress. I was smack in the middle of a review!
Where Technology meets Sacrilege

The cover of the book has TONS of writing on it. As a matter of fact the entire text of most children’s books could fit onto the cover of this book it is so jam packed with information. There is a big bold red (do you see a pattern here: see previous cover review) 100% in the upper left hand corner claiming this book is “One Hundred Percent Comprehensive Authoritative What You Need.” How do the authors know what I need? This disclaimer is not credited to anyone either – just because I wear a T-Shirt that has big bold letters “Drew is 100% Cool” doesn’t make it so. It turns out I am 100% cool but again that is beside the point.

Now I must examine the majestic graphic in the middle of the cover. It looks like a pair of half human / half alien hands is holding an empty Evian® bottle with swirling numbers hovering all around in concentric circles. I’m thinking they were trying to make some vague reference to a data store surrounded by data but I do this for a living and I haven’t a damn clue what they are getting at.

There is other text on the cover including the author's name but it is time to move on to our favorite – oft forgotten area – the spine. Again we are slapped in the face with the huge 100% Comprehensive Logo in case you forgot if this book was only 98% or 99% comprehensive since turning the book over. Then a reprise of the title: Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible. Now the ultimate beating – We have been reminded twice of the 100% deal and now the potential customer reads about the “Sample application code on the companion Web site” Companion Web site? That site must be awesome, probably much cooler than the site you are currently on (that was sarcasm for those of you scoring along at home).

Finally we flip over to the back of the book. The main quote here is “If Lotus Notes and Domino 6 can do it, you can do it to…” Isn’t that a little like saying “if this piece of paper can be written on you can write on it!”? Finally there are some obligatory screen shots to show what a pro you will become in no time and a couple of bar codes and some additional URLs. Finally the cost - $49.99 USD, $74.99 Canadian, and (Pounds Sign) 34.95 British Money seems a bit steep. Just remember that if you buy this book you have something seriously heavy to kill spiders with and you can use it for like bicep curls or leg presses to buff up for the ladies.

There is nothing a foxy lady loves more than a geek with a Programming Bible.

If you have read the programming bible cover to cover do not e-mail me as you will bore me to tears. If you have, however, skimmed the book or totally hate its guts shoot me an e-mail at drew@xtremewailing.com. Till next time!

Drew
